 Five Pipes: Five Eras (collaboration with youth & adults at Teaneck Creek Conservancy) Bio
Eduardo Alexander Rabel is a visual artist currently based in Miami, Florida. His work critiques injustice and attempts to construct a vision of a more just society based on collaboration and community concerns. Born in Detroit, Michigan, to a Cuban immigrant father and a Kentuckian mother, Eduardo received his B.F.A. from Cornell University (Fine Arts) and his M.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts (Illustration as Visual Essay). In 1998 he participated in the Cabras Project, an artists' residency program in a small mountain village in Mexico, where he painted his first community mural at the local kindergarten. Since then he has facilitated numerous collaborative murals in New York, New Jersey, Kentucky and Florida. He has also worked as a teaching artist for a variety of organizations in New York City, and directed an after-school program in Brooklyn for five years. In 2006 he joined Groundswell Community Mural Project and was the lead artist on a four-story-tall mural in East Harlem in collaboration with local teens. In 2007 he led a mural project at the Farm Aid festival involving over 200 concertgoers. In 2009, he led 165 people in the creation of "Five Pipes: Five Eras," a series of environmental murals on five large concrete pipes that had been abandoned in the New Jersey wetlands. In 2010 he worked with a team of undocumented immigrant youth in Florida to create a 155-foot-long mural that told the story of their life journeys, their struggles, and their dreams. In addition to his murals, Eduardo also creates artwork independently in the studio, utilizing a variety of media and often incorporating repurposed materials. His solo work has been included in Artlink@Sotheby's International Young Art (an invitational auction in Tel-Aviv), as well as a variety of other venues in New York, New Jersey, Florida, and Mexico. He also plays percussion, utilizing a variety of repurposed objects - such as paint cans, buckets and water bottles - in addition to more typical instruments such as congas, cymbals, shakers, and rain stick. |
